Lead roles developing urban transport systems in Britain, Canada and the USA.

 

Lagos Metro Blue Line Since 2008, Michael Schabas has been providing technical and commercial leadership to Eko Rail which is developing the first metro line in Lagos, under a 25 year PPP concession.

Tyne & Wear Metro Advised the Metro Management in 2009 on their bid to retain responsibility for operation of the metro system serving greater Newcastle.

London Crossrail  In 1994, Michael Schabas was retained by the Department for Transport to review the Crossrail project. From 2003 to 2009, he has led Superlink, a group of senior railway managers proposing "A Better Crossrail" for London. 

Channel Tunnel Rail Link  On behalf of the London Borough of Newham, he conceived and developed a plan to use St Pancras. He was subsequently retained as an advisor to Union Railways which adopted the proposal. St Pancras International Terminal opened in 2007.  

London Docklands Light Railway  On behalf of Olympia & York, the developers of  Canary Wharf, Michael Schabas identified requirements and solutions for upgrading the railway. He then formed the Brown & Root/Booz Allen Joint Venture which won a £100m contract to re-engineer the DLR for higher capacity and reliability.

Jubilee Line Extension  As Vice President, Transport Planning (1988-1991) for the Canary Wharf developers, Michael Schabas conceived and promoted the Jubilee Line Extension. He subsequently advised the European Investment Bank which funded the initial £100m private sector contribution.

Ankara Metro Project  As Manager, International Projects at the Urban Transportation Development Corporation, Michael Schabas identified the opportunity to equip Ankara’s first metro line and secured Government trade-aid finance for feasibility study. UTDC subsequently won the contract to supply the initial 96 cars.

Vancouver Skytrain  Michael Schabas was Design Coordinator (1981-1983) and responsible for final route definition for a 22km elevated automated mini-metro system. Vancouver Skytrain project was completed within a demanding four year schedule. He returned to Vancouver in 2003 to advise a consortium bidding for the Richmond-Airport line.
