With broad career experience in the development and management of railways and urban transport systems, Michael Schabas advises private and public sector clients. He has worked on projects in more than 20 countries.

He has particular expertise developing innovative business strategies, preparing and reviewing business plans and feasibility studies, and building teams for complex projects. He has a detailed understanding of the technical, economic and political opportunities and constraints within which rail and urban transit systems must operate.

As an advisor, bidder and contractor, Michael Schabas has extensive knowledge of finance and contractual delivery structures such as public-private-partnerships, concessions and franchises. He has hands-on operating experience, and has served on the boards of companies delivering commuter, intercity and long-distance passenger and freight rail services as well as urban buses. He has led and written bids and carried out acquisition due diligence.

He played key roles in planning, design and implementation of major rail projects including: the Jubilee Line Extension; Docklands Light Railway upgrade; West Coast route modernisation; Channel Tunnel Rail Link; and Vancouver Skytrain. He has advised clients including: UK and Canadian government agencies; the World Bank; European Investment Bank; and Asian Development Bank.

Since 2008, Michael Schabas is a Director of FCP Limited, a strategic management consultancy advising a wide range of public and private organisations on the development, management, and regulation of railways and metro systems.

He is the author of The Railway Metropolis: How planners, politicians and developers shaped modern London.

Michael Schabas received a Masters with Distinguished Achievement, from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 1981 and Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Toronto in 1979.
